Meet Historian James McAuley, Author of “Edmond de Rothschild: Finding Zion”

Join us via Zoom as prize-winning author and historian James McAuley introduces his latest work of nonfiction. Edmond de Rothschild: Finding Zion offers a fresh look at Zionism, Jewish history, and Jewish identity at a time when these issues have taken on a new, urgent relevance.

Born into the French branch of the legendary Jewish banking family, Edmond de Rothschild was devoted to art collecting and archaeology until his passions took an unlikely turn in the 1880s. To the surprise and disapproval of many Jews and others, he began purchasing land in Ottoman Palestine for persecuted Jewish refugees from Czarist Russia. The agricultural settlements Rothschild established lay the groundwork for what would one day become the State of Israel and also seeded some of its current complexities.
