April 7 @ 4:00 pm

Meet award-winning journalist Rebecca Clarren on Zoom as she introduces The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance, named a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2023. This fascinating work pieces together the interwoven history of Jewish immigrants and the Native Americans of South Dakota. Clarren discovered that the American government granted her family – Jews fleeing Russian pogroms – free land on the prairie that it had wrested from the Lakota. That land set Clarren’s family on a path towards financial success. With her rabbi, Clarren delved into traditional sources to see what Judaism had to say about her family’s debt (if any) to the Lakota.
