Inspired by Roland Perez’s autobiographical novel, Once Upon My Mother is an emotionally rich and often funny drama set in 1960s France. When Esther Perez, a spirited Moroccan-Jewish mother of six, refuses to accept a bleak prognosis for her newborn son born with a clubfoot, her fierce determination to help him live “normally” shapes his life well into adulthood and creates a bond that is both powerful and complicated. Featuring music by Jewish music legend Sylvie Vartan, who appears as herself, this vibrant cinematic gem became a major crowd-pleaser in France, celebrating the extraordinary, against-all-odds devotion of a mother’s love.
