Conversational Hebrew Class
Conversational Hebrew Class
February 23, 2026 in
Israel
By Murray Blank
Languages are a challenge for me. And I am not really competent in biblical Hebrew. Nonetheless, I’m a student in Yoel Gleizer’s Conversational Hebrew class. And I am very much enjoying the experience. The class is a dozen adult students, currently meeting on Wednesday mornings at Beth El. We learn different topical things, such as slang expressions, Israeli restaurant ordering, purchasing merchandise, norms and behavior. The slang expressions are memorable, originating in various languages- Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, Moroccan, English, and so forth. Many are verbal shortcuts.
The class also operates in the setting of a Café. Time is set aside to welcome everyone warmly. While socializing, everyone drinks coffee and nibbles on treats. Various types of coffee- latte, cappuccino, etc. – are prepared on professional equipment by the master barista Yoel. In Israel, Yoel was a coffee connoisseur owning his own Café. It’s a great start for each class.
Everyone I speak to in our program values how pleasant and patient it is to be with Yoel. He’s so personable and lots of fun. If you have the opportunity to join the class, or be part of a new one, I think you’ll enjoy the experience. You’ll be treating yourself to a good time.
