Food Tourah: Noach

Parshat Noach – 2 parshiot down, only 52 more to go!

This week we have another well-loved story from Genesis – Noach (Noah).  The parsha includes the story of Noah’s ark and his multiple animal pairs.  When the floods end, God gives Noah a rainbow as a symbol of his covenant that he will never flood the earth again.  Also found in this portion, is the Tower of Babel.  So the story goes that in the beginning everyone had the “same language and the same words” (Gen. 11:1). The Babylonians wanted to build a tower that went up into the heavens to demonstrate their power and achieve fame. To stop this effort and punish their arrogance, God confounded their language and spread them all over the earth.

In this week’s parsha, Noach, we read: “Every creature that lives shall be yours to eat; as with the green grasses, I give you all these.” (Gen. 9:3)  This verse marks the Torah’s first reference to eating meat, so we’re sharing this recipe for Mouth-Watering Brisket.  There are so many ways to cook a brisket, try this version or enjoy your own family favorite!

With the parsha’s beautiful image of rainbows, bring some color to your table with a  Rainbow Salad.  And as a playful nod to the Tower of Babel, enjoy this recipe for Alphabet Soup, a comforting class from another local chef, Pati Jinich – perfect as the temperatures are dropping.  End your meal on a sweet note, Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars bring together the perfect pairing of ingredients – just like the pairs that Noah welcomed onto his ark!
