This multi-layered and moving memoir by renowned author-journalist Nicholas Lemann\, former dean of the Columbia School of Journalism\, follows Lemann’s life journey. He grew up in an ultra-assimilated New Orleans Jewish home\, shaped by Mardi Gras balls (and Jews’ exclusion from them) and now\, somewhat unpredictably\, is a committed Conservative Jew who negotiates a complicated balance between his Jewish allegiances and a challenging career in the secular world. \nBeyond Lemann’s personal story\, the book is a treasure-trove of intriguing and unusual topics. DESCRIPTION:Last year our 7th graders lamented the lack of an overnight trip\, so\, this year\, we’re gonna try one! \nMCPS is closed on November 2 and 3\, so we’re planning an overnight to Capital Camps! \nWe need at least 10 kids to sign up to make this program happen\, so please talk to your friends and sign up early so we can secure the date. \nWe will depart Monday morning and return Tuesday afternoon. \nThe fee the trip is $180 per person.* \nIf we get 20 kids to register we can ask to get moved to Nesiya Lodge! \n*Beth El has received a generous gift from the Bloom Family to help make Jewish educational experiences more attainable for families. The movie tells the story of five Black students who rode a segregated carousel in 1960\, igniting one of the earliest organized interracial civil rights protests in U.S. history. Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round is the little-known story of the Jews they marched with\, Nazis they provoked\, Congressmen they inspired\, and Civil Rights leaders they became. When white Jewish suburbanites from the community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing\, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. \nPlease register to attend using the form below by noon on November 1.
