SUMMARY:Parenting Book Club: Nurture the Wow
DESCRIPTION:As a first-time mom\, Rabbi Megdal is discovering how Jewish wisdom speaks to the joys and challenges of parenting small children. You are invited to join her for a fun and meaningful book club\, as we read Nurture the Wow: Finding Spirituality in the Frustration\, Boredom\, Tears\, Poop\, Desperation\, Wonder\, and Radical Amazement of Parenting. She is excited to explore this book together and learn from each other. We will meet at 9:30 am on the first Thursday of the month. Gatherings will start with a few minutes of coffee\, snacks\, and schmoozing\, followed by 45 minutes (we’re busy!) on one short chapter each month. Didn’t finish? Come anyway. We’ll make time to think\, laugh\, learn some Torah\, and talk with other parents who are figuring it out too.\nFree to attend. Register\, then pick up the book as a gift from Rabbi Megdal in her office Tues-Fri mornings (except holidays). Take a peek at the TOC here. \n

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round
DESCRIPTION:Join Chai Society 60+ for a screening of the film Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round. The movie tells the story of five Black students who rode a segregated carousel in 1960\, igniting one of the earliest organized interracial civil rights protests in U.S. history. Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round is the little-known story of the Jews they marched with\, Nazis they provoked\, Congressmen they inspired\, and Civil Rights leaders they became. When white Jewish suburbanites from the community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing\, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. \nPlease register to attend using the form below by noon on November 1. This event is open to Beth El members only. Thank you to Beyond BEENs for organizing this event for Chai Society 60+. \n

SUMMARY:From the Cockpit to the Pentagon: A Lunch & Learn with Colonel Aaron C. Schilleci
DESCRIPTION:Join Chai Society 60+ for a thought-provoking Lunch & Learn with Beth El congregant Colonel Aaron C. Schilleci\, a decorated Army aviator and senior leader in the Army National Guard. \nColonel Schilleci will share stories and insights from more than three decades of military service\, from enlisting in the Army as a young Intelligence Analyst to becoming a master-rated helicopter pilot\, flying more than 1\,200 combat hours over Iraq and Afghanistan\, and serving in senior leadership and strategic planning roles at the Pentagon. \nBut this conversation is about more than a remarkable military career. Aaron will also reflect on his experiences through the lens of faith\, family\, and community – as a Jew\, a husband\, a father\, and a Beth El congregant. What does service mean when viewed not only through the lens of a career\, but through the people\, values\, and traditions that shape who we are? \nCome enjoy lunch\, hear from one of our own\, and get a behind-the-scenes perspective on leadership\, service\, family\, and a life dedicated to serving others. \nThe cost for lunch is $10 per person. Registration is required by Monday\, November 16\, at noon. Thank you to Senior Caucus for sponsoring this Chai Society program. \n

SUMMARY:Yah Echsof Meditation Group
DESCRIPTION:While classical Jewish teaching suggests “Naaseh V’Nishmah” (“first we do\, then we understand”)\, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi\, founder of Jewish Renewal\, advocated for an alternative approach. He believed that profound connection comes from first understanding one’s inner Jewish self through study\, practice\, and meditation. This monthly gathering adopts Reb Zalman’s path. We will use meditation\, chant\, and study to delve into our spiritual tradition and cultivate a deeper\, more meaningful connection to our Jewish identity. \n

SUMMARY:Chutzpod! Live On Location at Beth El
DESCRIPTION:On Location at Beth El: Live Recording of the Chutzpod! Podcast\nDoors open at 5:00 pm; the podcast recording begins promptly at 5:30 pm. A light reception to follow. \nChutzpod! is a renowned\, frank\, and wide-ranging conversation about how to build a good life\, drawing on real-life dilemmas and millennia-old Jewish wisdom. Each week\, Rabbi Shira Stutman and journalist Hanna Rosin explore life’s toughest questions through a Jewish lens\, responding to challenges submitted by listeners and audience members alike. \nGot a question you’ve been too polite to ask your rabbi? Ask ours. \nChutzpod! is coming to Beth El\, and co-hosts Rabbi Shira Stutman and Hanna Rosin want your questions. Ask anything: Jewish ethics\, Jewish life\, Jewish in-laws. Why do we do that thing we do? Is it really a sin to fill in the blank? What does the Torah say about your neighbor’s leaf blower? \nPrevious episodes have tackled questions such as: \nShould You Give Your Kid a Super Jewy Name?\nCan a Jew Play Santa on Christmas?\nCan You Use “Dirty Money” for Good Deeds?\nBig questions\, small questions\, and questions you’d only ask in a room full of friends are all welcome. Shira brings the texts\, Hanna brings the curiosity\, and together we bring the chutzpah. \nNo cost to Beth El members thanks to the generosity of donors supporting our 75th anniversary celebrations; $18 for nonmembers. \nDon’t miss this special 75th Anniversary event. Register now to reserve your spot and be part of the conversation.

SUMMARY:Civil Rights Journey to the South
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Harris and members of Congregation Beth El for a trip exploring the Jewish history of the Civil Rights movement this winter\, December 13-15. The Civil Rights journey empowers and inspires participants to return home and get involved\, as they realize they have the power to make a difference. Participants will meet primary sources\, such as a reverend who collaborated with Dr. King and individuals who took part in the march from Selma to Montgomery. We will also explore Jewish involvement in the Movement and how our Passover story resonates deeply with the Civil Rights narrative. By visiting the Equal Justice Initiative\, we help participants understand that Civil Rights is not just an issue that affected certain people in the 1950s and 60s\, but continues to be a pressing concern today\, championed by various groups who feel unheard in society. \nThe cost of the trip is $1\,600 per person and includes hotel accomodations and local transportation Sunday to Tuesday; all meals from Sunday lunch to Tuesday lunch (with the exception of Monday dinner); and all admission and programming costs. Airfare is not included. Click here to view the trip itinerary. For those interested in spending Shabbat in Atlanta\, separate arrangements can be made and coordinated with Rabbi Harris. \nInterested in learning more? Join us via Zoom for an information session about the trip on Thursday\, October 15\, 7:00-8:00 pm.
