This lay-led service blends tradition and creativity\, drawing on contemporary and innovative Jewish music from around the world. \n\n6:30 pm – Kol Haneshama Musical Service\n7:30 pm – Shabbat Dinner hosted by the NuBEENs and Beyond BEENs empty nester groups.\n8:15 pm – Guest speaker Andrew I. Schoenholtz\n\nFollowing Shabbat dinner\, we will welcome guest speaker Andrew I. Schoenholtz\, who will discuss “A Nation of Immigrants or a Nativist Nation: Which America Will Prevail?”  \nAndrew I. Schoenholtz is a Professor from Practice at Georgetown Law\, where he co-directs the Center for Applied Legal Studies\, the asylum clinic in which students represent refugees fleeing persecution who seek asylum in the United States. He also directs the Certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies and serves as the faculty director of the Human Rights Institute. Schoenholtz has taught courses on refugee law and policy\, refugees and humanitarian emergencies\, and immigration law and policy\, as well as a practicum on the rights of detained immigrants. Prior to teaching at Georgetown\, he served as Deputy Director of the US Commission on Immigration Reform. He also practiced immigration\, asylum\, and international law with the Washington\, DC law firm of Covington & Burling. \nSchoenholtz has conducted fact-finding missions in Haiti\, Cuba\, Ecuador\, Germany\, Croatia\, Bosnia\, Malawi\, and Zambia to study root causes of forced migration\, refugee protection\, long-term solutions to mass migration emergencies\, and humanitarian relief operations. He researches and writes regularly on refugee law and policy. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the annual Daniel Mann Literary Luminaries Lecture featuring guest speaker Emily Tamkin\, author of Bad Jews: A History of American Jewish Politics and Identities\, and The Influence of Soros: Politics\, Power\, and the Struggle for an Open Society. Tamkin is a journalist by trade\, and she writes and reports mostly on Jewish identities and politics\, U.S. foreign policy\, and illiberalism. \nThe Literary Luminaries Lecture series was conceived by the late Daniel Mann z”l\, a Jewish community professional and Library Committee member. He organized the first several presentations\, including our inaugural lecture in 2009\, featuring Dr. Peggy Pearlstein\, then-head of the Hebraic Section at the Library of Congress. After Daniel’s death in 2014\, the series was renamed in his memory.

SUMMARY:Lunch and a Program: Stolpersteine: Memorializing the Victims of Nazism
DESCRIPTION:Join Senior Caucus for lunch and a program on Tuesday\, May 19\, at 12:30 pm. Stolpersteine (German for stumbling stones) are 4×4 inch brass plaques set into the sidewalk in front of a building where a victim of the Nazis lived or worked. They were created by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992. Since then\, more than 100\,000 stones have been set in European cities. In 2008\, Marsha Rehns went to Wuerzburg\, Germany\, for the setting of a stone for her great-uncle\, Ignaz Rindskopf. Marsha will describe the emotional stone-setting and the book she wrote about the project and her family’s history in Germany. Howie Stein\, whose relatives were also memorialized with Stolpersteine\, will add his reflections. A list of congregants who have had stones placed for their family members\, as well as details about the loved ones\, will be distributed.
