Celebrated Israeli author Dr. Maya Arad will introduce Happy New Years, the second of her books of fiction to be translated into English following The Hebrew Teacher, winner of a 2024 National Jewish Book Award. Happy New Years tells the story of an Israeli emigrant’s life in the United States over five decades through her annual Rosh Hashanah letters to her former Israeli classmates. What do these holiday letters reveal and what do they conceal? Has the experience of Israeli emigrants changed over time? How do Israel and the United States compare regarding feminism? Arad will be in conversation with Dr. Lauren Strauss, who teaches Jewish history and literature at the American University in Washington, DC.
