SUMMARY:Beth El Night at JxJ: DC Jewish Film and Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:One of the highlights of the year is almost here!  The Edlavitch DCJCC’s JxJ: DC Jewish Film and Music Festival begins on May 7 and runs through May 17. Once again\, Beth El has a special opportunity. \nNow through April 29\, tickets for the Opening Night presentation of Once Upon my Mother at Landmark Bethesda Row are reserved exclusively for Beth El members!* Join your Beth El friends and community on Thursday\, May 7 at 7:30pm\, for this special screening of Once Upon my Mother\, winner of the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at the Miami Jewish Film Festival.   A triumphant celebration of unconditional love\, this movie is a joyful\, heartwarming family saga that radiates faith\, devotion\, and the transformative power of maternal love. \nInspired by Roland Perez’s autobiographical novel\, Once Upon My Mother is an emotionally rich and often funny drama set in 1960s France. When Esther Perez\, a spirited Moroccan-Jewish mother of six\, refuses to accept a bleak prognosis for her newborn son born with a clubfoot\, her fierce determination to help him live “normally” shapes his life well into adulthood and creates a bond that is both powerful and complicated. Featuring music by Jewish music legend Sylvie Vartan\, who appears as herself\, this vibrant cinematic gem became a major crowd-pleaser in France\, celebrating the extraordinary\, against-all-odds devotion of a mother’s love. \nDon’t miss our Third Annual Beth El Night at JxJ. Dare we say this has become a tradition! Tickets are $16 each. Purchase your tickets for the May 7 showing of Once Upon my Mother at Landmark’s Bethesda Row today! \nIf you have a Festival Pass—whether purchased or received through a donation to JxJ—you can indicate that on the registration form. If you’re unsure whether your pass is active\, we recommend double-checking with JxJ before selecting this option to ensure your registration is complete. \nTo explore other festival screenings\, click here. \n*Remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday\, April 30 – so don’t wait! \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lunch and a Program: Stolpersteine: Memorializing the Victims of Nazism
DESCRIPTION:Join Senior Caucus for lunch and a program on Tuesday\, May 19\, at 12:30 pm. Stolpersteine (German for stumbling stones) are 4×4 inch brass plaques set into the sidewalk in front of a building where a victim of the Nazis lived or worked. They were created by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992. Since then\, more than 100\,000 stones have been set in European cities. In 2008\, Marsha Rehns went to Wuerzburg\, Germany\, for the setting of a stone for her great-uncle\, Ignaz Rindskopf. Marsha will describe the emotional stone-setting and the book she wrote about the project and her family’s history in Germany. Howie Stein\, whose relatives were also memorialized with Stolpersteine\, will add his reflections. A list of congregants who have had stones placed for their family members\, as well as details about the loved ones\, will be distributed. Contact Pat Danoff at pat.danoff@gmail.com to provide information or with questions. \nWhile this program is sponsored by Senior Caucus\, all congregants who are interested are invited to join us. \nCost: $10 per person\, includes lunch. Registration deadline is noon on May 15. There is no cost to attend the talk only\, which begins at 1:30 pm\, but please tell Ricardo you are coming. \n

SUMMARY:Beth El Community Security Training for Congregants
DESCRIPTION:Beth El will hold congregation-wide security training on June 28 on community safety and threat response. Jshield will be at Beth El from 11:00 am to noon to instruct and model best practices on staying aware and safe at the synagogue and beyond. \nParticipants will learn how to recognize behaviors that may signal concern\, strengthen everyday situational awareness\, and respond calmly and effectively during moments of uncertainty. The session may include realistic walk-throughs of synagogue spaces\, guidance on communicating concerns quickly\, strategies for helping protect children and older congregants\, and practical ways to support one another before first responders arrive. We will also include age-appropriate guidance for parents and teens so that every part of our community can feel informed and prepared. The training is designed not to create fear\, but to build confidence\, shared responsibility\, and the kind of steady preparedness that helps our community remain both welcoming and resilient. \nPlease use the form below to register.
