DESCRIPTION:Join us on for prayer\, reflection\, and song! Welcome Shabbat in a joyful\, participatory\, and engaging service\, with melodies that calm\, songs that enliven\, and prayers that elevate. This lay-led service blends tradition and creativity\, drawing on contemporary and innovative Jewish music from around the world. \n\n6:00 pm – Light Dinner\n7:00 pm – Kol Haneshama Musical Service\n8:15 pm – Oneg with guest speaker DeMaurice Smith\n\nFollowing the service\, there will be an oneg featuring special guest speaker DeMaurice Smith\, who will speak on “How Integrity\, Courage and the Collective Responsibility to Uplift Others Have Shaped a Career in Securing the Rights of Workers.”  \nPrior to his work with the NFL players union\, DeMaurice was a trial lawyer and litigation partner of two major DC law firms\, and he also served as the chair of one of the firm’s government investigations and white-collar practice groups. He also served as counsel to then-deputy attorney general Eric Holder in the US Department of Justice. DeMaurice also spent nine years with the U.S. Attorney’s office and one with the Department of Justice\, working on national security and prison construction-related issues. \nDinner registration is now closed\, but all are welcome to join us for services and the oneg.

Katz\n\nAfter services and dinner\, join us as we welcome our special guest speaker\, Jeffrey L. Katz\, who will speak on “Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany’s Attempts to Make Amends.” \nJeffrey L. Katz is a veteran journalist with extensive experience working at newspapers\, magazines\, radio and online news\, including 15 years at NPR. His new book\, Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany’s Attempts to Make Amends\, is a personal take on Germany’s belated efforts to come to grips with the Holocaust. It’s a story of remembrance\, responsibility and reconciliation\, written by the son of survivors. The book is being praised as “a remarkably balanced and human portrait of the benefits and limits of reconciliation over time and space.” Katz traveled to Germany several times to explore his family’s roots and meet with local members of the country’s remembrance movement. Read more about Unsettled Ground. \nThis discussion will be moderated by congregant Michelle Brafman\, noted author of Washing the Dead; Bertrand Court: Stories; and Swimming with Ghosts\, the companion novel to Draw Near to Me. Her work has appeared in Oprah Daily\, O Quarterly\, Slate\, LitHub\, Tablet\, The Forward\, and elsewhere. \nRegistration for dinner is now closed. Everyone is invited to come to the service. Those who did not register for the dinner are invited to relax and socialize in the Beth El Library until it’s time for the guest speaker’s discussion. \n

Welcome Shabbat in a joyful\, participatory\, and engaging service\, with melodies that calm\, songs that enliven\, and prayers that elevate. This lay-led service blends tradition and creativity\, drawing on contemporary and innovative Jewish music from around the world. \n\n6:30 pm – Kol Haneshama Musical Service\n7:30 pm – Shabbat Dinner hosted by the NuBEENs and Beyond BEENs empty nester groups.\n8:15 pm – Guest speaker Andrew I. Schoenholtz\n\nFollowing Shabbat dinner\, we will welcome guest speaker Andrew I. Schoenholtz\, who will discuss “A Nation of Immigrants or a Nativist Nation: Which America Will Prevail?”  \nAndrew I. Schoenholtz is a Professor from Practice at Georgetown Law\, where he co-directs the Center for Applied Legal Studies\, the asylum clinic in which students represent refugees fleeing persecution who seek asylum in the United States. He also directs the Certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies and serves as the faculty director of the Human Rights Institute. Schoenholtz has taught courses on refugee law and policy\, refugees and humanitarian emergencies\, and immigration law and policy\, as well as a practicum on the rights of detained immigrants. Prior to teaching at Georgetown\, he served as Deputy Director of the US Commission on Immigration Reform. He also practiced immigration\, asylum\, and international law with the Washington\, DC law firm of Covington & Burling. \nSchoenholtz has conducted fact-finding missions in Haiti\, Cuba\, Ecuador\, Germany\, Croatia\, Bosnia\, Malawi\, and Zambia to study root causes of forced migration\, refugee protection\, long-term solutions to mass migration emergencies\, and humanitarian relief operations. He researches and writes regularly on refugee law and policy. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a PhD from Brown University. \nDinner registration is now closed\, but all are welcome to join us for the service at 6:30 pm and the speaker at 8:15 pm.
