SUMMARY:Book Chat: The Director by Daniel Kehlmann
DESCRIPTION:Our across-the-street neighbors\, the Bethesda United Methodist Church (BUMC) book club\, will join us at Beth El for an in-person book discussion of Daniel Kehlmann’s The Director. This novel\, based on the life of pioneering 20th century Austrian film director\, G.W. Pabst\, has earned rave reviews for its powerful\, darkly comic World War II story of art\, ego\, and bad choices. The Director raises provocative questions about the moral responsibility of artists and ordinary citizens in times of political crisis. \nThis program is sponsored by the Library Committee\, Women of Beth El\, and Men’s Club. \nQuestions? Please contact Robin Jacobson at librarian@adasisrael.org.

SUMMARY:Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews and the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:In 1860\, there were 150\,000 Jews living in the United States. How did this small minority\, mostly recent immigrants\, react to the fierce national debate over slavery? During his virtual visit\, Richard Kreitner\, author of Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews\, the Civil War\, and the Fight to End Slavery\, will introduce noteworthy Jewish individuals who opposed slavery\, defended it\, or remained silent. The case of those who opted to stay silent raises some uncomfortable questions.  Would we have been more courageous in their circumstances? What is the cost of political courage in our own time? \nCopies of Fear No Pharoah are available through Politics & Prose at a 10 percent discount. Click here and insert the coupon code SPECIAL10 (no spaces) in the field labelled “Apply Coupon.” You will then have the option of either picking up the book at the store or having it shipped. You must create a free P&P account (easy to do) to order the book. \nThis program is sponsored by the Library Committee\, Women of Beth El\, and Men’s Club\, in partnership with Adas Israel Congregation’s Library and Sisterhood. \nQuestions? Please contact Robin Jacobson at librarian@adasisrael.org. \nPlease use the form below to register for the Zoom information. \n

SUMMARY:Yah Echsof Meditation and Exploration Group
DESCRIPTION:While classical Jewish teaching suggests “Naaseh V’Nishmah” (“first we do\, then we understand”)\, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi\, founder of Jewish Renewal\, advocated for an alternative approach. He believed that profound connection comes from first understanding one’s inner Jewish self through study\, practice\, and meditation. \nThis monthly gathering adopts Reb Zalman’s path. We will use meditation\, chant\, and study to delve into our spiritual tradition and cultivate a deeper\, more meaningful connection to our Jewish identity. \nPlease RSVP using the form below. \n

SUMMARY:Getting Ready for College Admissions
DESCRIPTION:Many of you have high school students who will be applying to college within the next few years. College admissions has changed so dramatically since all of us applied to school (way back in the 20th century). Today’s students face an ever-expanding list of decisions: \nShould they take the SAT or ACT? \nSubmit their scores to test-optional colleges? \nApply Early Decision or Early Action? \nFocus on grades\, extracurriculars\, summer internships\, or all of the above? \n(Phew!) \nThankfully\, there are two members of our congregation who are experts in helping teenagers and their families successfully navigate the college admissions process without becoming overwhelmed or stressed. \nJared Friedland\, Founder of the Bethesda-based test prep and college admissions firm The Playbook\, and Steve Feldman\, Founder of the tutoring\, test prep\, and admissions firm Private Prep\, will be co-leading a special interactive workshop for 9th- and 10th-graders of Beth El. \nAt a later date there will be a special Zoom presentation for Beth El parents. \nAmong other topics\, Jared and Steve will explain how students can: \n\nDiscover colleges where they will thrive academically\, socially\, and culturally.\nMaximize their chances of admission\, even to highly-selective universities and programs.\nUse extracurriculars\, summer programs\, and volunteer activities to demonstrate sought-after qualities like compassion\, leadership\, and ingenuity.\n\nThere is no cost for this special opportunity. \n
