This lay-led service blends tradition and creativity\, drawing on contemporary and innovative Jewish music from around the world. \n\n6:00 pm – Light Dinner\n7:00 pm – Kol Haneshama Musical Service\n8:15 pm – Oneg with guest speaker DeMaurice Smith\n\nFollowing the service\, there will be an oneg featuring special guest speaker DeMaurice Smith\, who will speak on “How Integrity\, Courage and the Collective Responsibility to Uplift Others Have Shaped a Career in Securing the Rights of Workers.”  \nPrior to his work with the NFL players union\, DeMaurice was a trial lawyer and litigation partner of two major DC law firms\, and he also served as the chair of one of the firm’s government investigations and white-collar practice groups. He also served as counsel to then-deputy attorney general Eric Holder in the US Department of Justice. DeMaurice also spent nine years with the U.S. Attorney’s office and one with the Department of Justice\, working on national security and prison construction-related issues. \nThe deadline to register for dinner is 12:00 pm on Wednesday\, June 24. No RSVP required to attend only the service and oneg. \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Women of Beth El and the Men’s Club for our annual hike in Rock Creek Park on Sunday\, August 2\, at 9:30 am. Park at the Rock Creek Nature Center (5200 Glover Road NW\, Washington\, D.C.). We will meet there and then walk across the street towards the horse barn and pick up the trail. We will doing the Boulder Bridge hike. It is an approximately four-mile loop trail\, but there is an opportunity to turn around earlier to shorten. After the hike\, we will have light refreshments outside the Nature Center. This event is free but registration is required so we can track who is attending and provide weather or other updates.

This multi-layered and moving memoir by renowned author-journalist Nicholas Lemann\, former dean of the Columbia School of Journalism\, follows Lemann’s life journey. He grew up in an ultra-assimilated New Orleans Jewish home\, shaped by Mardi Gras balls (and Jews’ exclusion from them) and now\, somewhat unpredictably\, is a committed Conservative Jew who negotiates a complicated balance between his Jewish allegiances and a challenging career in the secular world. \nBeyond Lemann’s personal story\, the book is a treasure-trove of intriguing and unusual topics.
