DESCRIPTION:Beth El volunteers will pack boxes of non-perishable food at the Manna warehouse in Gaithersburg for distribution to the needy in Montgomery County. We are in need of up to 12 volunteers age 11+.In addition to serving the greater community\, one of the goals is to give all Beth El parents a way to participate with their children (age 11 and older) in community service. SUMMARY:Parenting Book Club: Nurture the Wow
DESCRIPTION:As a first-time mom\, Rabbi Megdal is discovering how Jewish wisdom speaks to the joys and challenges of parenting small children. You are invited to join her for a fun and meaningful book club\, as we read Nurture the Wow: Finding Spirituality in the Frustration\, Boredom\, Tears\, Poop\, Desperation\, Wonder\, and Radical Amazement of Parenting. She is excited to explore this book together and learn from each other. We will meet at 9:30 am on the first Thursday of the month\, starting on October 1. Gatherings will start with a few minutes of coffee\, snacks\, and schmoozing\, followed by 45 minutes (we’re busy!) on one short chapter each month. Didn’t finish? Come anyway. We’ll make time to think\, laugh\, learn some Torah\, and talk with other parents who are figuring it out too.\nFree to attend. SUMMARY:7th and 8th Grade Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Last year our 7th graders lamented the lack of an overnight trip\, so\, this year\, we’re gonna try one! \nMCPS is closed on November 2 and 3\, so we’re planning an overnight to Capital Camps! \nWe need at least 10 kids to sign up to make this program happen\, so please talk to your friends and sign up early so we can secure the date. \nWe will depart Monday morning and return Tuesday afternoon. \nThe fee the trip is $180 per person.* \nIf we get 20 kids to register we can ask to get moved to Nesiya Lodge! \n*Beth El has received a generous gift from the Bloom Family to help make Jewish educational experiences more attainable for families. We want every teen to be able to attend this program without causing financial burden. SUMMARY:Civil Rights Journey to the South
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Harris and members of Congregation Beth El for a trip exploring the Jewish history of the Civil Rights movement this winter\, December 13-15. The Civil Rights journey empowers and inspires participants to return home and get involved\, as they realize they have the power to make a difference. Participants will meet primary sources\, such as a reverend who collaborated with Dr. King and individuals who took part in the march from Selma to Montgomery. We will also explore Jewish involvement in the Movement and how our Passover story resonates deeply with the Civil Rights narrative. By visiting the Equal Justice Initiative\, we help participants understand that Civil Rights is not just an issue that affected certain people in the 1950s and 60s\, but continues to be a pressing concern today\, championed by various groups who feel unheard in society. \nThe cost of the trip is $1\,600 per person and includes hotel accomodations and local transportation Sunday to Tuesday; all meals from Sunday lunch to Tuesday lunch (with the exception of Monday dinner); and all admission and programming costs.
