SUMMARY:Getting Ready for College Admissions
DESCRIPTION:Many of you have high school students who will be applying to college within the next few years. College admissions has changed so dramatically since all of us applied to school (way back in the 20th century). Today’s students face an ever-expanding list of decisions: \nShould they take the SAT or ACT? \nSubmit their scores to test-optional colleges? \nApply Early Decision or Early Action? \nFocus on grades\, extracurriculars\, summer internships\, or all of the above? \n(Phew!) \nThankfully\, there are two members of our congregation who are experts in helping teenagers and their families successfully navigate the college admissions process without becoming overwhelmed or stressed. \nJared Friedland\, Founder of the Bethesda-based test prep and college admissions firm The Playbook\, and Steve Feldman\, Founder of the tutoring\, test prep\, and admissions firm Private Prep\, will be co-leading a special interactive workshop for 9th- and 10th-graders of Beth El. \nAt a later date there will be a special Zoom presentation for Beth El parents. \nAmong other topics\, Jared and Steve will explain how students can: \n\nDiscover colleges where they will thrive academically\, socially\, and culturally.\nMaximize their chances of admission\, even to highly-selective universities and programs.\nUse extracurriculars\, summer programs\, and volunteer activities to demonstrate sought-after qualities like compassion\, leadership\, and ingenuity.\n\nThere is no cost for this special opportunity. \n

SUMMARY:American Maccabee: Theodore Roosevelt and the Jews
DESCRIPTION:A wealthy\, Protestant\, powerful member of the American elite\, Teddy Roosevelt was an unlikely friend to struggling Jewish immigrants. Yet across the span of his public career\, Roosevelt was closely involved with Jewish issues\, both domestic and foreign. Many of the quandaries Roosevelt grappled with more than a century ago feel newly relevant and urgent – the limits of free speech\, the place of diversity in hiring decisions\, immigration\, and the role of the United States in confronting humanitarian issues in foreign countries. Dr. Andrew Porwancher\, author of American Maccabee: Theodore Roosevelt and the Jews\, will be in conversation with TV political and legal analyst Michael Zeldin\, host of the public affairs podcast “That Said with Michael Zeldin.” \nCopies of American Maccabee are available through Politics & Prose at a 10 percent discount. Click here and insert the coupon code SPECIAL10 (no spaces) in the field labelled “Apply Coupon.” You will then have the option of either picking up the book at the store or having it shipped.
