Organ Donation
Ask the Clergy
Rabbi Greg Harris
Should I be an organ donor? The short answer is - yes. There is an impression that Jews should not be organ donors because of the value of honoring the deceased (Kavod haMet). The foundational Jewish value of pikuach nefesh (saving a life) takes precedence though. All Jews should be organ donors when possible. Rabbi Elliot Dorff has said, "The overriding principles of honoring the dead and saving lives work in tandem. That is, saving a person's life is so sacred a value in Judaism that if a person's organ can be used to save someone else's life, it is actually an honor to the deceased."
