Men’s Club Sponsored Softball Teams
by Larry Bruser
The Men’s Club sponsors two softball teams which play each spring and fall in the Montgomery County Synagogue League. This is a competitive but friendly league for ages 18 and up, with most players in their 40’s and 50’s. The original team, now known as Beth El Blue, started play about 16 years ago. The second team, Beth El Gray, started in the fall season in 2007 and joined the main spring league in 2009. The teams offer Beth El men a wonderful opportunity to play a great game, enjoy team camaraderie, and most importantly, to maintain their youth. The teams have also been successful, with Blue winning a spring regular-season championship in 2005, finishing in second place in spring 2007, and winning the fall playoffs in 2005 and 2009. The Gray team has established itself more quickly, tying for first place this season (spring 2010) after only three years in the league. The 2010 spring season ended for both Blue and Gray in the third round of the playoffs, when they lost close games to perennial top teams. Both Beth El teams currently have full rosters, but there is at least some turnover each year, so teams usually have openings for new players. Young power hitters are especially welcome to help the teams maintain their winning ways! Games are Sunday mornings in both spring and fall. Beth El men who would like to play should contact Blue team captain Larry Bruser or Gray team co-captains Mitchell Weiss and Greg Klein.
