Spring 2006
Beth El’s softball team ended its 2006 season on July 9. The team had an 8-8 record in the regular season and was 1-2 in the playoffs. While not as successful as last year’s 15-3 first-place team, it was an enjoyable season, and we played well considering we had a much tougher schedule. In doubleheaders against all the elite teams in the league, we split with all of them except the #1 seed, B’nai Sholom White. The highlight of the season was our last-inning 23-22 comeback victory after trailing 16-0 against B’nai Shalom Purple, one of the top teams. We were eliminated from the playoffs after losing our two games by a total of three runs. The season will have its ceremonial conclusion later in the summer with the fifth annual team/family barbecue party and awards ceremony.
As usual, every player made a valuable contribution, including five new players. The team’s batting star was Bruce Kershner, who had both the highest batting average (.645) and the highest slugging average (.935). Leaders in other categories were Larry Bruser with 3 home runs, Steve Solomon 17 RBI’s, Mark Goldstone 20 runs and 23 hits, and Mike Polis with a 5-2 pitching record.
Other players on the team were Sam Boxerman, Rob Fersh, Larry Fluger, Mike Gips, Phil Goldberg, Sid Groeneman, Richard Klein, Ken Levine, Andrew Loewinger, Matt London, Joe Martin, David Mills, Dan Moskowitz, Roy Niedermayer, Danny Pine, Aryeh Portnoy, Andy Schoenholtz, David Schoenholtz, Don Silverstein, Steve Strauss, Ben Teicher, Steve Teitelbaum, and Brent Weingardt.
Spring 2005
The Beth El Men’s Club softball team presented the trophy for 1st place in the spring season to our sports team founder Dave Levine. Larry Bruser, team captain reviewed the accomplishments of 2005 including: 15-3 spring season (which garnered the 1st place win), two playoff game wins (before losing to Har Shalom 7-6), and their fall record 12-1, which gave the team a 29-6 record for the year. Larry introduced all the players and highlighted many of the key individual accomplishments (too many to include here).
