Kolot Halev is a Jewish community choir in the greater Washington area that has performed at the Shalshelet International Festivals of New Jewish Liturgical Music, The Jewish Heritage Museum in NYC, at Arlington National Cemetery, and other venues. - Sunday, May 19, 11:00 am, at the JCC of Greater Washington: Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio - Family Concert - “The Story Behind the Notes.” Join Israeli musicians - pianist Alon Goldstein, cellist Amit Peled, and clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein - in an interactive magical musical journey. The Trio will share the stories behind the music—both real and imaginary—to enhance and inspire the audience with wonder and appreciation for a selection of familiar and unfamiliar works. Musical knowledge is not required for this special journey, but active imaginations are encouraged! RSVP to Janet Getz at jgetz@jccgw.org.
- Sunday, May 19th, 7:30 pm, at the JCC of Greater Washington: Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio. The Trio, bound by their Israeli roots—pianist Alon Goldstein, cellist Amit Peled, and clarinetist Alex Fiterstein—combine their special gifts and originality as soloists with their marvelous sense of ensemble and love of chamber music. Their program will include works by Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt and Debussy. The concert will be followed by a reception sponsored by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF). The concert is part of the JCC’s Polinger Artists of Excellence Concert Series. For more information: www.jccgw.org/concerts.
- Sunday, May 19, 3:00 pm, at the DCJCC: Free screening of "Revolutionary Optimists," Amlan Ganguly empowers children to become activists and educators, with powerful results. The Revolutionary Optimists follows him as he attempts to replicate his work in the brick fields outside the city, where children live and work in unimaginable conditions. For more information: www.wjff.org.
- Monday, May 20, 7:30 pm, at the DCJCC: Beyond the Stage Reading of "The Monastery," by Randy Baker - a reading celebrating local playwrights. Hidden in the shadow of Mt. Ararat, in a monastery forgotten by time, two American soldiers discover a woman among the rubble who will change their lives forever. For more information: www.theaterj.org.
- Tuesday, May 21, 7:30 pm, at the DCJCC: screening of "Green Fields," an ascetic young scholar ventures into the Lithuanian countryside, searching for the city of "true Jews." The most critically acclaimed and beloved of American Yiddish talkies, Edgar G. Ulmer’s soulful open-air adaptation of Peretz Hirshbein’s classic play heralded the Golden Age of Yiddish cinema. “Green Fields” celebrates an idyllic world of tribal wholeness and innate piety – no other movie has ever represented the shtetl with such lyricism. For more information: www.wjff.org.
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:00 pm, at the Avalon Theatre: the Israeli film "Alice." Alice, 38, spends her days sleeping. Working nights at a rehabilitation center provides her an accessible excuse that conceals fatigue and emotional apathy. Yigal, Alice's husband, feels lonely and tormented by her chilly attitude, while his pent up anger gradually heightens. Eli, her 9 year old son, is desperate for her love. The rehabilitation center houses and treats thirty young women who have suffered emotional crisis. Alice prefers as little communication as possible with the girls and performs only the basic demands of her job: Handing out medication, supervising meals, and overseeing shower time. After lights out, in her small room in the staff area, Alice meets Yoel, her lover. On the narrow single bed, a passion for another kind of life, for what might have been, is aroused. The girls' volcanic emotional world reflects how desolate Alice's life is in contrast. Thus, she cannot remain on the sidelines for too long. The confrontations of a dominant young woman on the one hand and the dependence of another, hurl her into a power triangle that will have devastating consequences. Presented by the Washington Jewish Film Festival and the Embassy of Israel as part of REELIsrael. For more information: www.theavalon.org.
- Wednesday, May 22, 7:00 pm, at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum: the film "Joachim Prinz: I Shall Not be Silent." German-born rabbi Joachim Prinz was expelled from the Reich in 1937 after speaking out against the systematic erosion of the civil rights of Jews by the Nazis. He immigrated to the United States where the struggles of disenfranchised African-Americans in the segregated South reminded him of his experiences in Germany. He became an outspoken ally of the American civil rights movement, helping to organize the 1963 March on Washington–the 50th anniversary of which occurs this August. A panel discussion will follow the film. For reservations: www.ushmm.org/events/joachimprinz.
This list of upcoming events at Beth El includes religious services and other synagogue activities for the next eleven days.

In recognition of this truism, congregants Evan Krame and Scott Glick have created a new service meant to engage the Beth El community. Join us in an exploration of faith, comfort, and healing through liturgies, melodies, and poetry of Jewish music. Songs will include some by the legendary Debbie Friedmanz”l, who gave the world Jewish music that is transformative, offering joy and comfort, hope and faith, healing and inspiration.
